Summer Pope Named OFTC’s 2020 GOAL Winner
Summer Pope, a student at Oconee Fall Line Technical College (OFTC) competing for the College’s Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) Bridge Program was announced the College’s 2020 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (2020 GOAL) winner during the Sandersville Rotary Club Meeting on Thursday, December 5.
Pope hopes to be accepted into the college’s upcoming ADN cohort in August of 2020 to become licensed registered nurse. She was nominated by Math instructor, Lecresicia Marion.
GOAL is a statewide program within the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) that honors excellence in academics and leadership among the state’s technical college students.
Seven students were nominated by instructors for this year’s competition and competed in a series of interviews and evaluations by a selection committee made up of representatives from local businesses and industries; they were judged on qualities like academic achievement, personal character, leadership ability and enthusiasm for technical education.
This year’s selection committee consisted of representatives from both the Dublin and Sandersville Rotary Clubs: Jan Horadan and Jimmy Huckfeldt of Sandersville and Sam Williams, Eugenia Powell, and Kathryn Black Wilcox of Dublin.
Of the seven competitors, four were chosen as semi-finalists: Noah Brack, Carly Hooks, Victoria Gay, and Summer Pope. All four were honored during the Rotary Club meeting and Pope was announced as winner at the close of the meeting.
As the college winner Pope will compete in regional judging against winners from other TCSG colleges in February and will represent OFTC at the state-level in April when one student will be named the statewide 2020 Goal winner in Atlanta.
This year’s competing students were: Destiny Blizzard, Telfair; Summer Pope, Laurens; Noah Brack, Laurens; Carly Hooks, Telfair; Victoria Gay, Laurens; Kristen Hall, Laurens; and Emily McDonald, Laurens.
