Rotaract Club Distributes ‘Gifted Hands’ Book to Laurens County 5th graders
Oconee Fall Line Technical College’s Rotaract Club, a community of young people who work with the local Rotary Club, distributed the book ‘Gifted Hands’ by Dr. Ben Carson, to every fifth grade student in the city, county and private schools in Laurens County the week of February 20.
Thanks to the generosity of the Oconee EMC Foundation, the books were purchased and distributed to the students at Northwest Laurens Elementary, Trinity Christian, Southwest Laurens Elementary, East Laurens Elementary and Dublin Middle School.
“Dr. Carson’s story shows the type of perseverance and support that is required to rise above your circumstances,” said Janet Smith, OFTC’s Director of Student Life and the Rotaract Club Advisor. Despite the many hardships Ben Carson faced as a child, “he rose above all the odds and became one of the world’s foremost neurosurgeons.”
“By exposing students to a story of the rewards of discipline,” she continued, “we increase the likelihood that our community 5th graders will not only come to understand the importance of reading and writing, but will also be encouraged to understand that regardless of their circumstances they can achieve their goals and follow their dreams.”
At each school, members of OFTC’s Rotaract Club presented the books to the students and showed a short video clip of Dr. Ben Carson speaking about his life.
