Dublin’s Practical Nursing Students Pinned During OFTC Ceremony
Fourteen Oconee Fall Line Technical College (OFTC) Practical Nursing students were honored during the College’s Nursing Pinning Ceremony held in Dublin, Tuesday, July 30.
Each year OFTC holds this ceremony to symbolize the nursing student’s completion of their educational requirements which enables them to sit for the state board licensure examination and welcomes them into the family of nurses.
“We are extremely proud of this group of students who are nearing the end of their journey to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN),” shared Scott Gray, OFTC Practical Nursing Instructor. “These students have worked tirelessly to accomplish this feat and deserve every accolade sent their way. For many of these students, this is just one of many steps they will take and succeed at during their education and nursing careers. We want to congratulate them on this accomplishment and wish them all the best in the future.”
The tradition of the pinning ceremony dates to the Crusades when members of the Knight Hospitallers were honored with Maltese crosses after caring for wounded soldiers. Then in the 1860’s Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, continued the tradition when she decided all nursing students who completed nursing training deserved recognition.
During the ceremony each graduating nurse received their pin and the entire class lit a candle and recited the Nightingale Pledge in honor of Florence Nightingale.
Carmen Wheeler, R.N., an Infusion Nurse at the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin served as guest speaker and delivered an address to the nursing graduates, encouraging them in the exciting days ahead.
“Always grow and continue to learn,” Wheeler said. “Remember where you come from and mentor new nurses and be kind. Be compassionate, become a listener, a teacher, a professional and a servant.”
“Thank you for rising to the challenge with such courage,” she added. “Congratulations and welcome to nursing.”
