Cecila Swanson, Adult Education Instructor at Oconee Fall Line Technical College (OFTC) was recently named the College’s 2021 Rick Perkins Award (RPA) winner and Instructor of the Year.

The announcement was made in combination with the College’s 2021 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) student winner announcement at a Dublin Rotary Club Meeting on Friday, March 5.

OFTC's 2021 RPA Winner

The RPA program seeks to honor the Technical College System of Georgia’s (TCSG) most outstanding instructors who make significant contributions to technical education through innovation and leadership.

Swanson is a graduate of OFTC and has been a part of the college’s adult education department since 2015. She has an Associate degree in Business Administration Technology, a Bachelor of Science degree in Technical Management, a Master of Science degree in Higher Education Leadership, and is currently working on her Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership.

Swanson was nominated for the RPA by Demme McManus, OFTC’s Dean of Adult Education.

Swanson competed against five other OFTC instructors: Brent Redfern, Deisel Equipment Technology Instructor on the Dublin Campus; Laura Layfield, Computer Information Technology Instructor on the Sandersville Campus; Josh Bridges, Welding and Joining Technology Instructor on the Dublin Campus; Brenda Gurr, Medical Assisting Instructor on the Dublin Campus; and Tony Simmons, Welding and Joining Technology Instructor on the Sandersville Campus.

Each participant prepared a speech and participated in a series of interviews held by a panel of judges made up of local community members, including Washington County Pilot Club members Diane Davie and Georgeanne Cook; and Jenn Farrin. The instructors were judged on criteria like innovative instruction, educational achievement, and college and community leadership.

As the college winner, Swanson will represent OFTC in regionals as she competes against other top instructors from TCSG colleges in April. The top region finalists will compete at the state-level in June where the winner will be named the state’s 2021 RPA winner by the TCSG.
