P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education Awards Blizzard $1,000 Grant

The P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education recently awarded Oconee Fall Line Technical College (OFTC) student, Destiny Blizzard, a $1,000 grant to aide in completing her associate degree in cybersecurity.

The P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education, established in 1973, is a need-based grant program providing one-time financial assistance to women whose education has been interrupted and who find it necessary to return to school to complete a degree or certification that will improve their marketable skills for employment to support themselves and or their families.

“This grant is important to us because our mission is to empower women to succeed in their lives through grants, loans and scholarships for education,” shared Hersha Hatchett, chairman of Dublin’s P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education chapter.

The grant was awarded to Blizzard at OFTC on Wednesday, December 4 and is intended for education related expenses such as tuition, books, supplies, transportation, childcare while in class, required uniforms, testing fees and equipment and tools.

“I wouldn’t have even known about this grant opportunity if it had not been for Mrs. Janet Smith, who is the Director of Student Life at OFTC in Dublin,” Blizzard said. “But when I found out about it, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try so I applied.”

And with a check in-hand, Blizzard’s efforts clearly paid off. “Education has always been important to me so receiving this grant will help me to go further,” she said. “I’m so excited about this opportunity and it eases a lot of worry when it comes to thinking about how to pay for college.”

“I just want to thank everyone who helped make this possible,” she added.

Blizzard is a resident of Telfair County and attends OFTC in Dublin.
